Sorry, printing is disabled for the free drills.

This is to encourage teachers to use the inexpensive subscription service for tracking scores. Tons of useful features come included with your subscription, you can avoid wasting all that paper ...and eMusicTheory relies on subscriptions to survive.

Thank you for your support and understanding, and please contact me with any feedback!

Getting started

  • Click "Settings..." to change the way the drill works — you can control if sounds will play.
  • Click "Start" to get started.
  • You'll see a staff with a chord displayed, as selected by the choice boxes below.
  • Change any of the choices to show a different chord.
  • OR... choose the note you'd like to use (sharp? natural?) and click on the staff to change the chord's root note.
  • When you're done working, click "Stop".

Using your keyboard

You can quickly choose the note you want for a root note, using the keys 1-5: 1 = double-flat, 2 = flat, 3 = natural, 4 = sharp, 5 = double-sharp. Identify the triad type using this letter: Major, miNor, Augmented, Diminished (sorry, no shortcuts for 7th chords...)
